Editing and Copywriting For Recipe Testing and Cookbooks
In both my personal and professional life, I’ve had the opportunity to write and collaborate on many recipes from conception to final product. It is important that a recipe is written in a thoughtful, clear, logical and user-friendly manner so that anyone referencing it understands the ingredients and procedure, and the final product can be replicated repeatedly with no consistency issues.
To many, this may sound like a preposterously simple task, but anyone who has been confused by poorly worded instructions in a recipe book or felt as though they were on an outlandish scavenger hunt to determine when and how to use ingredients for a sauce, could understand why some extra skill and care might be necessary!
My peers and mentors have recognized my talent for recipe writing, and encouraged me to redesign or develop many of the recipes we used regularly in the restaurant at my previous job. I have spent countless hours pouring over cookbooks from various eras and genres, with a focus on contemporary vegan and plant-based cookbooks, developing my sense for what is useful, intriguing, and actionable to a recipe reader and cookbook audience.
In my previous professional life as a commercial real estate paralegal, clear and creative communication was key in the work I produced for our clients — from research reports, professional emails, public presentations, and communications with the local government. I also obtained my B.A. from New York University in English & American Literature, and Politics & Public Policy Administration, and received world-class instruction on producing unique, clear, and purposeful writing in creative and professional application.
My current rate for testing and/or editing recipes is $30/hour (4 hour minimum) plus all expenses related to testing — typically limited to ingredient and travel costs.
